In 1870 Publican Mary Ann Smith was granted a license to build the Plumbers Arms Hotel at 47 William St. Sometime later it was burnt to the ground by fire.
It was rebuilt as the New Zealand Hotel in the same spot on the corner of Yurong St before it was once again knocked down for the extension of William St in 1917. The current reincarnation features Federation style architecture from 1919 when it was rebuilt for the 3rd & final time.
Previously frequented by the rough & tumble razor gangs & cocaine dealers of the time, the Hotel has stood proudly as an entry from the city to the eastern suburbs of Sydney.
In mid-2016 the current owners began a two year process of painstakingly refurbishing the Hotel to its former glory.
